Australia’s most advanced studio and production precinct is a step closer with major international powerhouse Shadowbox Studios selected as the preferred proponent to deliver the vision for sound stages, workshop and production office spaces, and a backlot. The precinct will also be able to support short-term accommodation and allied industries close to key infrastructure services.

The opportunity

The northern Gold Coast screen production opportunity is a greenfield site investment for a major studio complex located mid-way between the Gold Coast and Brisbane in Yatala. Major studio developer and operator Shadowbox Studios, with locations in the London and Atlanta metro areas,  has proposed the construction of up to 10 sound stages, workshops, office spaces, a backlot, and training facilities on the City-owned site

The precinct will have the ability to support short-term accommodation and allied industries near key infrastructure and services.

Shadowbox has proposed a two-phase development, starting with an initial build of up to 6 sound stages, workshop, office building, backlot and outdoor filming space expected to be operational in 2028. The Phase 2 future expansion - in response to market demand – may include an additional 4 sound stages, workshop and office space.

The project is expected to generate more than 1000 jobs during construction and 3400 direct and indirect jobs once both phases are operational.

It is expected the new film studio could contribute approximately $195 million towards the  economy each year once complete.

Background

The Gold Coast, for over 30 years, has built an enviable reputation as a world renowned screen production centre. The city is home to the internationally renowned Village Roadshow Studios, offering a range of diverse and unique easily accessible locations, as well as experienced and talented film and production crews.

We have identified a site for the immediate expansion of the screen industry. The site, based in Yatala, has a zoned area of nearly 85ha for Low Impact Industry, Future Low Impact Industry Precinct and Open Space.

This opportunity aims to further enable the continued expansion of the film and screen sector on the Gold Coast, with the objective of positioning the city as a globally recognised and creative leader in the screen industry.
