City of Gold Coast today progressed plans to transform the Nerang Administration Precinct into a mixed-use neighbourhood that unlocks housing opportunities and delivers a new community hub for the community.

The precinct is proposed for City-owned land encompassing the former Nerang Administration Centre, Bicentennial Building and the former Town and Country site.

The redevelopment will transform surplus City-owned land into a vibrant mixed-use precinct centred around the Hinterland Gateway Community Hub and incorporate a new auditorium, library, community meeting rooms, learning facilities and performance spaces. The Hub will also be designed to be used as an evacuation centre during natural disasters.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said the project delivers housing, community and economic benefits for the city and reflects feedback received through community consultation and engagement

“I’m excited to see this project move to the next stage with a market process to identify development partners capable of delivering this important urban renewal opportunity,” Mayor Tate said.

““We recognise the potential of this project to support housing diversity including key worker housing, attract investment and deliver contemporary community facilities that residents will need as the region continues to grow.

“We have committed to a partnership approach that would leverage private sector investment and delivery efficiencies to support delivery of the Hinterland Gateway Community Hub.

“This will support value for money delivery of civic assets for ratepayers, as community facilities will be included in the project as returnable works to be delivered by a development partner in exchange for land for a Council approved mixed use development.”

Mayor Tate said the project would build on Nerang’s role as the gateway to the Gold Coast hinterland while creating new civic assets for the community.

“The Hinterland Gateway Community Hub will bring together learning, performance, community services and public spaces in a modern facility designed for future generations.”

Environmental planning principles will be embedded throughout the project, with biodiversity corridors retained and enhanced and identified koala habitat areas protected in accordance with planning requirements.

The project is jointly led by City of Gold Coast, along with its commercial advisory arm, Invest Gold Coast. Invest Gold Coast will manage the market process to identify development partners capable of delivering the precinct’s housing, community and environmental objectives.

The market process is expected to commence in July, with further details to be released in due course.
