Upcoming

Repurposing the Miami Depot site into a hub that supports the growth of creative industries, attracts investment, and provides valuable community benefits.

The opportunity

We will work with the private sector to deliver the Miami Creative Industries Precinct to enhance the Gold Coast's economic and cultural landscape with a mixed use vision which celebrates Miami's village character.

The vision is set to transform the suburb into an arts district as a tourism and lifestyle destination like Brooklyn’s Navy Yards in New York City and Greenwich Design District in London. The inclusion of high end residential, affordable housing, retail and commercial office space as well as public realm and community facilities will enhance the eclectic urban vibe.

It is proposed to feature:

  • a mix of tech, visual effects, gaming and screen businesses
  • retail and residential uses
  • community facilities and public realm.

The project aligns with the Council’s strategic priorities.

The screen sector:

  • supports almost 4832 jobs and contributed $571.6 million value added to the Gold Coast economy in year ending June 2023
  • is expected to increase to 5977 employees and $643 million value added by 2032.

The Gold Coast’s potential as a world class destination for the screen industry has attracted international interest with Shadowbox Studios developing a new production facility at Yatala and Australian film dynamo Baz Luhrmann relocating his global headquarters to the city.

Benefits

  • Support 500 to 1000 ongoing jobs in creative, tech and screen industries
  • Inject $40 to $81 million value add to the local economy per annum
  • Catalyst for the attraction of screen industry investment
  • New jobs and investment through an increased number of film and television productions on the Gold Coast
  • Higher value skilled employment through the attraction of pre/post-production, visual effects and related companies
  • Boost capacity of local companies to leverage the full lifecycle of film and television series production
  • Increase housing diversity and capacity to accommodate population growth in Light Rail Station Neighbourhoods
  • Opportunity to integrate community facilities and a new public realm

Next steps

Invest Gold Coast will progress a Miami Depot Creative Industries Precinct Implementation Paper and Draft Plan to refine the site’s vision, development mix and proposed way forward.

This plan will be presented to Council in June 2025.
